Our goal is to produce 100 Padded Hangers for the St. Louis Soldiers Memorial Museum. The hangers are needed to store the hundreds of military uniforms in their care. Help us preserve this history and honor our Veterans!

READY........SET........SEW!!!!!!

Hi All!
Tomorrow, October 15 is the big day! We will sew 90 padded hangers for the Soldiers Memorial. I already made 10....5 of them are in the Museum display.  I'm excited! I'm tired too, but it's been so worth it! I would do it again in a heartbeat! I did the final prep on 67 covers last night. (that's 134 pieces!) Whew!

We start sewing at 1:00 pm tomorrow and the presentation by the Soldiers Memorial begins at 2:00pm. Don't miss it!

Yesterday, as I was leaving work, I was lucky enough to witness the Tribute Wall arriving in Arnold. It was something to see! I've never seen so many motorcycles (escorts) in one place. The procession was absolutely awesome. What an honor for me to get to see that! I will be visiting the Tribute Wall with my family in the next couple of days. I wouldn't miss it.

Watch for posts about the results of the sewing marathon!

Regards,
Angie

You can view it as a slideshow or pictures individually. Click on the picture to get the text attached.
The sewing marathon is only a week away and we are excited! We WILL reach our goal of 100 hangers and are proud to help the museum. I must say, the display rendered me speechless when I saw it; it really makes you pause and think. What our service men and women have done for us can never really be repaid.

IT'S HERE!!

The Soldiers Memorial Museum display arrived yesterday! We are so honored that the museum trusts us with these treasures! In the collection is an American Red Cross Nurse's Jacket worn by Marie Boles Tindall in WWII, a US Air Force Jacket worn by Henry Schuler in the 50's and 60's, a US Army Nurse Corps jacket from WWII thru 1950's, and a US Navy Seaman 1st Class jacket worn during WWII. Most touching is a US Marine Corps jacket worn by W.T. Guerin who was killed in action in Vietnam and also from the St. Louis area.

Soldiers Memorial Display

Hi All!
One week from today, the Soldiers Memorial Museum display is coming to the Jefferson County Library-Arnold Branch. I do so look forward to seeing this small portion of their collection. The "sewing marathon" for the hangers is only 2 weeks away! We still need batting to make this happen! Volunteers are still needed to help sew also....even if you can't sew, we can put you to work! :) Please help us honor our Veterans! If you don't own a sewing machine, there will be one there for you to use.....Call 636-296-5171 for more information.

Have a great day!

We Still Need Quilt Batting!

Happy Friday!
The response on materials for this project has been wonderful! We've received enough hangers, but we still need that quilt batting! The sewing "marathon" is still three weeks away, but time flies! Our hope is to reach our goal of 100 hangers or materials for that many by the end of October. I am confident that we can do it if we pull together. We still need more volunteers to sew on the 15th of October. Don't forget to be at the library at 1pm. Even if you can't sew, there is something you can do to help with the assembly of hangers. At 2pm, representatives of the Soldiers Memorial will make their presentation and I'm sure it will be interesting and informative. For more information, call 636-296-5171 or email alee@jeffcolib.org.

See you there!
Have a great weekend!

We Have 100 Hangers!!!

We have received the 100 hangers needed! Yay! We still need more quilt batting to complete them, but I am confident we can do it! We are also in need of volunteers to help sew on October 15, 2010 or at home anytime between now and then. Don't forget the display from the Soldiers Memorial going up on October 4, 2010. It will be something to see! This is such a worthwhile project and I am so excited that there is something we can do to honor our Veterans. They've done so much for us! Won't you join us?

Have a great day!

Only 18 Hangers to Go!!!

We can do this! I received 30 more hangers this morning. We're only 18 away from our goal! We still need more quilt batting but I'm confident that it will magically appear. I need volunteers to help me sew! The sewing marathon will be on October 15, 2010, along with the presentation by the St. Louis Soldiers Memorial Museum. Check back soon and often for the confirmed times. Thank you so much to all who have contributed so far!

The Soldiers Memorial Military Museum

Hello all!
I found these facts regarding the museum especially interesting.
The Memorial and Museum officially opened on Memorial Day, May 30, 1938 and as of today.....it is still not air conditioned! To store the artifacts in a facility that is not climate controlled is a difficult task at best. There are some things in the works to generate funds for air conditioning, as I understand.

Also, the windows in the museum are not UV protected. We all know what kind of damage UV rays can do to textiles. They are working on this issue as well.

We can't save the world all at once....that's why we're making hangers. The hangers will help protect the uniforms in the collection. Wire hangers do permanent damage to fabrics. In St. Louis humidity with no Air conditioning, wire hangers would rust, would they not?

These are details that stood out to me....please visit www.stlsoldiersmemorial.org for more information.
Have a great day!

WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

On October 14, 2010, the Veterans Traveling Tribute Wall will be in Arnold, MO. The wall will remain here through October 17, 2010. To coincide with this event, on October 4, 2010, the Jefferson County Library-  Arnold Branch will welcome a display from the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum in St. Louis. The display will contain items from each branch of the military. On October 15, 2010, the library's sewing class will learn how to make padded hangers to store some of the hundreds of uniforms at the museum. There will be a presentation by representatives of the museum on this day as well. After the sewing class, any extra materials will also be given to the museum to continue this worthwhile project. Between now and the end of October, our goal is ONE HUNDRED HANGERS FOR HONOR, or at least enough materials for this quantity.

Check back with this blog often to stay informed as plans are completed with definite dates and times! Any plastic hangers (old or new), quilt batting, and 100% cotton muslin you can spare would be appreciated! Please bring these items to the Information Desk at the Arnold Branch of the library at 1701 Missouri State Road, 63010.

Thanks!
Angie L.
